Reptile Light Fixtures FAQ's

What types of lighting fixtures are essential for reptiles?

There are many different lighting fixtures available to purchase. Choosing the right fixture will depend on how you want to provide lighting within the enclosure and on which type of lighting you intend to use. There are two different bulb fittings available, eddison fittings or bayonet fittings. These fit either screw in or clips in bulbs. When purchasing either one of these fittings, you are required to purchase a fitting/lamp holder to secure the fitting in place. You can also purchase LED lights, lamp clamps which clamp onto the enclosure, light domes which sit on top of the enclosure (can only be used on enclosures which have a mesh top), and fan heaters. Depending on the species you intend to keep will depend on which lighting fixture you require.

What types of lighting fixtures and accessories are available to purchase?

Reptile lighting fixtures and accessories include eddison and bayonet fittings, fan heaters, light domes, clamp lamps, light reflectors, LED lights, heat lamp cages, lamp holders, handheld thermometers, standing lamp units, lamp covers and more.

How should I position the lighting fixtures in my reptile's enclosure?

Positioning the lighting fixtures correctly is crucial for providing the optimal light and heat for your reptile. Reptiles are required to thermoregulation, so it is important to place the light fitting on one side of the enclosure to create a heat gradient within, allowing your reptile to reside to a cooler area if need be to thermoregulate.

Are there any safety precautions I should take with reptile lighting fixtures?

Yes, safety precautions include ensuring that the fixtures are securely mounted and cannot fall into the enclosure, using appropriate fixtures and holders that are rated for the wattage of the bulbs being used, keeping the fixtures away from any flammable materials and regularly inspect them for any signs of damage or wear, and always using a heat cage over and heat bulbs to prevent any burns to your reptile.

Why Reptile Lighting Is Important

Reptiles are cold-blooded creatures. This doesn’t mean that they are sinister, instead it means that they rely on the environment to regulate their body temperature. In the wild, they will bask in the sun to warm themselves up, and hide in the shade when it’s time to cool down.

This can be simulated in captivity thanks to bulbs that can imitate the sun. Objects can also be used to create shade for your reptiles to retreat to when they get too warm. Place a basking rock directly beneath a heat lamp will create a great focal point of their habitat.

Many animals rely on a day/night cycle to live healthy lives, and this can also be replicated in captivity. Infra-red bulbs will help to illuminate their habitat at night, while still simulating nighttime conditions. Night black bulbs also help to simulate the day/night cycle while providing a heat source 24/7.

Bear in mind that too much heat can kill your reptiles, so make sure that the bulb you use is not too powerful. Make sure also that your reptiles have a relatively cool area to retreat to when needed. Hot bulbs can also cause harm to your reptiles if direct contact is made, so make sure the bulb is safely enclosed.
