Christmas Foods to Avoid Giving Your Pet

We love to include our pet's in Christmas, however including them to much can be dangerous. That means that a lot of the foods we enjoy can be very harmful for dogs and cats. We have compiled a list of some Christmas foods that you should avoid giving your pet this Holiday season.


Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine; this affects your animals heart, kidneys, and nervous system which can be fatal. Keep chocolate far away from your dog, cat, bird, lizard or any type of pet.


If consumed, alcohol can cause serious health problems such as:

  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • depression
  • damage to the central nervous system
  • tremors
  • breathing difficulties
  • coma
  • In some cases, even death.

Grapes & Raisins

These are highly toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure if eaten. Mince pies. Christmas cake and Christmas puddings all contain raisins, so please keep out of reach of you pup.

Onions, Garlic & Chives

These veggies and herbs can cause stomach problems when ingested which could lead to red blood cell damage for your pet.


Macadamia nuts can cause a number of issues including:

  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Depression
  • Hypothermia

Nuts can also be a choking hazard for dogs.

Fatty Foods

Giving your pet fatty food can cause short-term issues such as stomach upset or pancreatitis. This can also lead to long-term issues such as obesity.

  • Ham
  • Turkey Bones
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Pie
  • Ice Cream
